The Commission for Interreligious Dialogue was founded in 2002 within the Union of Superiors General (USG). After the Congress on Religious Life, held in Rome in 2004 on the theme, "Passion for Christ - Passion for Humanity", the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) also joined, sending some representatives.
So, composed of members of both Unions, the Commission aims at keeping alive within the General Councils issues relating to interfaith dialogue, providing a platform for discussion and study for all interested persons, and organising initiatives to spread a “culture of interreligious dialogue” among Religious resident in Rome. It also works with SEDOS on themes of mutual interest. The Commission normally meets three times a year at the UISG offices. Each smester it offers a half-day of in-depth study to all the Religious (men and women) of Rome. Sometimes experts preside, or visits are organised to places of significance for other Religious.
