Peripheries in Our Lives

lay centreEVENTS - "Each Christian and every community must discern the path that the Lord points out, but all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the 'peripheries' in need of the light of the Gospel." (Pope Francis)

Peripheries, a key word in the pontificate of Pope Francis, signifies "going to the boundaries”, “going to the outskirts”, "going beyond our own comfort zone to reach out to others", especially to those who are socially marginalized. This includes not only those who experience real poverty but intellectual and spiritual poverty as well. Going to the peripheries also means to stretch one’s mind and heart to the limits, to have the courage and boldness to explore new realities.

As The Lay Centre prepares for a new academic year, I hope that we can encourage one another to discern that path, the particular way in which we, as a community, are called to reach out to those on the periphery.… and to have the courage to do just that.

This theme, PERIPHERIES, will accompany both our community reflection and also the various Lay Centre programs during this academic year. Follow us online for more information.
