March 30, 2017

cmswrCMSWR - March 8, 2017 (Washington, D.C.) – The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious (CMSWR) will offer its third summer course, “Spouses of Christ, Daughters of the Church” (Esposas de Cristo, Hijas de la Iglesia) from July 17-28, 2017. The “Spouses of Christ, Daughters of the Church” 2017 course registration is now open to all Spanish speaking women religious from across the country. The two-week summer course will be hosted by the Oblates to the Blessed Trinity in Hopewell Junction, New York. The Esposas de Cristo course provides a forum for ongoing intellectual formation, prayer, and community among Hispanic sisters from different congregations. This year’s course will be a study of the lives, historical context, and writings from the four women Doctors of the Church: St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Jesus, and St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus. “This course on the four women Doctors of the Church promises once again to be a time of formation, retreat, and friendship,” said Sr. Megan Mary Thibodeau, SOLT, course committee chair and General Sister Servant of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity. “It is a wonderful opportunity for intellectual and spiritual renewal and to be in community with religious women from different communities.” Sr. Maria Theotokos Adams, SSVM, academic designer of the course, explains that, "the four women Doctors of the Church are special lights for all contemporary women religious. These great saints illumined their times and the generations that followed. In the same way, we wish to serve Christ and His people with ever greater fidelity and creativity according to the conditions we face daily. I look forward to seeing the many different ways that the 2017 summer course will inspire and encourage the Spanish-speaking women religious who gather for this special event." The summer course is one of the many events through which the CMSWR seeks to enrich and nourish religious life in the United States. Women religious from different congregations will serve as instructors for the course, providing introductory talks and facilitating discussions. It is a communal experience of ongoing intellectual, theological, and spiritual formation, as promoted by Perfectae Caritatis, the Vatican II Decree on the Adaptation and Renewal of Religious Life: “Religious should strive during the whole course of their lives to perfect the culture they have received in matters spiritual and in arts and sciences” (18).
