UISG NEWS -  “This is not a celebration for just the Superiors general, but rather for all of Consecrated Life!” These words were spoken by Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the Dicastery of Consecrated Life, during the celebration on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of UISG that took place December 12th in Rome. From where he stood at the ambo, he could well see the over 400 sisters that filled the church of Traspontina.

The beginning of the celebrations for the Jubilee of UISG was a moment of encounter, of feast, of joy and emotion. It was a time of Open House in our offices so that all would feel that the UISG office is home to all women religious. All were participants in sending  on mission the ten sisters of the Migrant Project (as we write this, they have already set foot on the soil of Sicily.) This moment was also a time of mutual giving thanks for the work carried out by so many Women Religious who have believed in the Union. We wanted to make them all present, even those no longer among us, by including the names of all the secretaries and presidents of UISG from its foundation until today: 15 thanks to the Presidents and 12 to the Secretaries!

In her opening remarks, Sister Carmen Samut, president of UISG, invited us to look at the image of the Visitation on the cover of the program of the Eucharistic celebration: “We can imagine the conversation of these two women, sharing their hopes, fears, strengths, weaknesses, faith and love. We can imagine their prayer together; we can imagine how they supported and strengthened each other to do the will of God. Our Union seeks to be a space of mutual support for those who exercise a role of leadership. In our meetings, we also speak of the Lord who sends us into the whole world to bring the good news; we also speak of our own reality, of our fear in the face of what is new… we also know that we are more efficient and courageous together.”

Our gathering on Saturday was a beautiful picture of what the UISG wants to continue being: an inter-congregational and global space for Women Religious  for exchange and formation, where the differences of charism, culture, language and story provide impetus to go beyond what we already know with humility and welcome.
